Packaging Design: Maybelline Puzzled Collection

This Project Uses: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Dimension

I wanted to redesign a collection of products that would make the packaging both memorable and sustainable.

I decided to redesign Maybelline’s line of makeup palettes. I wanted to create something more easy to understand for beginners and focus on a collection that is both pleasing to look at and sustainable practically.

This project includes:

  • Logo Lockup Creation & Ideation

  • Die-cuts & Material Research

  • 3D Prototypes

Brainstorming & Sketches

Through sketching, I was able to think of thirty different sketches that followed ten different collections. All of these palettes feature die-cut packaging that effectively show the real colors of the palette without having to open it to preserve freshness.

While researching, I’ve noticed that a lot of new companies that are focused on a greener future have moved towards paper-based materials to create both eco-friendly and practical packaging.

Going Digital

I decided to go with the puzzle piece concept from my early sketches, as this idea works aesthetically as a collection. Through these unique shapes, all four pieces are labelled for a certain part of the face. The package also comes with a Maybelline Puzzled Collection piece that comes with a circular mirror.

Die-cut & Prototyping

Each piece of our collection would unhinge from the back of the palette. From there, the main source of negative space on each piece houses the contents and pigments of the palette.

Alongside each piece (excluding the mirror), we have a rectangular space that would house the brushes that come with each palette.

While analyzing competitors, I want to focus on styles of palettes that are made from organic and recyclable materials. These include paper, glass and cardboard.

Final Product

In Adobe Dimensions, I was able to convert my new shapes into STL’s where they could function as their own unique 3D shape. From there, we are now able to see how these palette would function on a 3D plane. The picture showcases each palette suspended in the air, similar to how they would be presented in a magazine advertisement or animated TV spot.
