The Polyvinyl Press

This Project Uses: Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop

Polyvinyl Records is a record label that presses and distributes music on both streaming platforms and physical releases. Their alternative catalog of artists are fresh and diverse, making them a popular name in the vinyl collecting community. In this project, I wanted to create a cohesive spread that discusses the history of the label along with artists on their catalog.

This project includes:

  • Logo Recreation & Ideation

  • A Two-Page Spread

  • Use of Interactive PDF/EPUBs

Sketching & Research

Concept 01

Iam8bit was the first company I did research on. This multimedia label presses a plethora of different video game soundtracks on to vinyl. For this spread, I would’ve discussed their catalog as well as their other forms of physical media.

Concept 02

Vaporwave is a music sub-genre that exploded in popularity in the early 2010s. Now, record labels on Bandcamp specialize in pressing popular releases in the genre on vinyl. This spread would focus on the catalog of many popular labels (e.g. My Pet Flamingo, Business Casual, Neocity Records, etc.)

Chosen concept

Polyvinyl Records is a record label that presses and distributes music on both streaming platforms and physical releases. Their alternative catalog of artists are fresh and diverse, making them a popular name in the vinyl collecting community. In this project, I wanted to create a cohesive spread that discusses the history of the label along with artists on their catalog.

I chose to do the spread on Polyvinyl mainly because the label has been around for a couple decades now, that and the idea of collection physical media is slowly becoming a trend again in the world of music.

Going Digital

Making a Layout

I wanted a visual divider that severed the top of the page from the bottom. This elegant water-like shape would allow me to work with four sections from a magazine-spread layout.

With that in mind I was planning on focusing my areas of content

Adapting the Logo for the Spread

I decided to revise the logo and create something more open and welcoming for the spread. I wanted to incorporate a desaturated in my spread to give the feeling of water to pair with the compass-inspired logo.

Final Product & Revisions

Final Product

I decided to use information from Polyvinyl’s website. This includes their about me page, artists’ pages, and a brief interview from the CEO of the record label. All images used are stock photos or were taken from Polyvinyl’s website.

Revision & Interactive Portion

To make this PDF spread interactive, I decided to make the images hyperlinks that would take users to the appropriate pages on Polyvinyl’s website. This includes:

  • The artists’ pages

  • The homepage

  • The artist catalog
